Churachandpur District’s Recovery Efforts Underway After Cyclone Remal

The Centre’s inter-ministerial team, including officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, visited Churachandpur district to assess the aftermath of Cyclone Remal. The team, which comprises key figures such as Addl. Advisor, DoDW Shri Dr Rajashekharan, and Under-Secretary, MoRD Rajiv Rana, AD, DOE Mahendra Chandrella, Junior Scientific Officer, DA&FW MoA&FW Srinivasa Murthy R and Churachandpur District Coordinator Mk. Riyazul Haque, conducted a thorough evaluation of the damages caused by the recent heavy rainfall, hailstorms, and floods.

During their visit to the district, the team was briefed by Thangboi Gangte ADC on the extent of destruction in a meeting held at the Conference Hall, Mini-Secretariat. The meeting was also attended by district-level officers who provided insights into the situation on the ground.

The team’s field inquiry included visits to several affected areas such as Buallian village, D. Leikot Village, Hill Town under Churachandpur Sub-Division, and Tuinom Khopi and Laijang village under Tuibong Sub-Division. To understand the full impact of the extreme weather events and to determine the necessary relief measures for the communities affected, the team interacted with the affected and effected persons on the ground.

They were accompanied by Dharun Kumar S, Deputy Commissioner, Thangboi Gangte ADC and SDOs of Churachandpur, Tuibong and Singngat, along with subordinate staff.

Cyclone Remal has had a significant impact on Churachandpur district, affecting 169 villages with 2744 houses damaged and 21 hectares of crop areas destroyed. The loss of two lives and 127 animals has added to the tragedy faced by the residents.

The inter-ministerial team’s assessment will play a crucial role in formulating a response plan to aid in the recovery and rebuilding efforts in Churachandpur district.
