DCW Chief Swati Maliwal visits victims of sexual violence in Churachandpur

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief, Swati Maliwal on Monday visited Churachandpur district headquarter to take stock of the inhuman atrocities of women situation in the wake of ethnic violence in the State since May 3, 2023.

Maliwal, who was suddenly denied permission for the visit by the state government, reached the state capital Imphal yesterday evening.

Upon arrival at Imphal airport, she complaint about being denied permission to visit Manipur and halted the night in Imphal. She visited Lamka and interacted with survivors of sexual violence and also with leaders of the Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF), Churachandpur.

Maliwal was advised to postpone her proposed visit to the State owing to the prevailing law and order situation. Soon after landing at the Imphal International Airport, the DCW Chief met CM Biren first and informed him that she wanted assess the condition of sexual violence survivors and to ensure that they were receiving counselling and legal aid.

In Churachandpur, the DCW chief was received by members of the Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF) Media Cell at their office and thereafter, the leaders briefed her about the traumatic conditions the two victims had undergone during those periods. The media cell members also detailed her about all other women who were victims of Meitei’s brutality, their stories still remained wrap under the carpet. The DCW chief, after interacting with the ITLF leaders, headed to meet victim and her husband.

The DCW chief was supposed to hold a press meet after meeting the victims. However, she reportedly returned to Imphal without holding a press briefing.
