HM in Moreh: To consider recalling Police Commandos from Moreh

A day after visiting strife-torn Churachandpur district, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday visited Moreh – a border town in the state of Manipur to take stock of the prevailing situation in Manipur.

After landing in Moreh, the Union Home Minister held a closed door meeting with the leaders of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs). The CSOs delegation led by the Hill Tribal Council (HTC), Moreh, submitted a memorandum to the visiting Minister, apprising him of separate administration for the Kukis.

In the memorandum, the local CSOs demanded immediate withdrawal of Police Commandos from Moreh town, separate administration for the Kukis, to take appropriate action against Meitei radical groups such as the Arambai Tenggol and the Meetei Leepun and to declared them as outlaw organizations. The memorandum also included demand for supply of essential goods to Moreh, Helicopter service from Moreh to Aizawl/Guwahati and to improve telecommunication in and around Moreh.

The visiting Union Home Minister assured the local CSOs leaders no to be apprehensive, and that all would be treated equally under the law of the land. The law does not discriminate someone because he/she belongs to a minority group, he said.

With regard to the demands put up by the CSOs, the Union Home Minister informed the CSOs leaders that there would be independent Judicial enquiry committee to be set-up by the central government to investigate the issue without any interference from the state government, which would be headed by a retired Chief Justice of India. Shah also appealed the tribal leaders to maintained peace for 15 days while assuring that the issue on recalling of the Police Commandos and Special Commandos posted at Moreh would be sorted out this evening itself. To enhance medical facilities during the crisis, Shah also informed the leaders that four Doctor teams from AIIMS will be arriving and he would apprise the Education Secretary, Government of India on education related matters.

The Union Home Minister was accompanied by Nityanand Rai, MoS Home Affairs, Sambit Patra, BJP National Spokesperson and Dr Vineet Joshi, Manipur Chief Secretary.
