The Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) has expressed deep concern over recent statements made by Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, who asserted control over both the hill districts and the valley regions of the state. The KIM has described these claims as misleading and contradictory to Singh's previous position, in which he acknowledged the division of administrative responsibilities between himself and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
In June 2023, following a violent ethnic conflict, Union Home Minister Amit Shah assumed direct control over the administration of the hill districts. This shift in leadership was a response to the growing need for impartial governance in the region, which had been heavily impacted by the violence. At the same time, Chief Minister Singh was tasked with restoring peace in the valley regions. The division was viewed as a strategic decision, which was welcomed by the Kuki-Zo community, who had lost faith in the state government following the ethnic violence that erupted on May 3, 2023.
The Kuki-Zo community saw this arrangement as a positive step toward justice and peace, as it provided a framework for impartial governance. Under the supervision of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, buffer zones were established between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo areas, effectively preventing large-scale violence and protecting countless lives.
However, the KIM strongly opposes Chief Minister Singh’s recent claims of control over both the hills and the valleys, which they argue not only contradict his previous statements but also undermine the authority and effectiveness of the Union Government. The KIM believes such statements are part of a disturbing pattern of shifting responsibility and avoiding accountability, intended to mislead the public and derail ongoing peace efforts.
The Kuki-Zo community has reiterated its demand for separation from the Manipur state government and called for direct administration under the Union Government, in the form of a Union Territory. The community views this as essential to safeguarding their rights, dignity, and future.
The Kuki Inpi Manipur concluded their statement with a pledge that the community will continue to fight for the establishment of a Union Territory until their goals are achieved.
