Manipur marked the 85th Nupi Lal Day, paying tribute to the unmatched courage and sacrifice of Manipuri women who resisted colonial rule. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, accompanied by Ministers, MLAs, and senior officials, offered floral tributes at the Nupi Lal Memorial.
In his address, the Chief Minister emphasized the bravery of Manipuri women who fought fearlessly against the British colonial regime without weapons. "These women sacrificed their lives for the survival of Manipur. Observing this day is a way to honor their legacy and inspire us to follow in their footsteps," he said. He also acknowledged the vital role of Manipuri women during other critical periods, including the Seven Years’ Devastation, highlighting their contributions to the state's resilience.
Addressing questions about the handling of Myanmar refugees, the Chief Minister clarified, "The government is adhering to United Nations guidelines and working under the supervision of the Central Government. Those criticizing the measures should consider the ground realities."
The state’s observance featured a range of cultural events, including theatrical performances that vividly depicted the Nupi Lal movement, educating younger generations about this significant historical struggle.
Earlier in the day, the 33rd Nupi Lal Ningsing Lamjel (Nupi Lal Memorial Run) was organized by the State Level Nupi Lal Ningsing Lamjel Organizing Committee. The run, which began at the Nupi Lal Memorial Complex and ended at Singjamer, symbolized the start of the historic movement. RD & PR Minister Yumnam Khemchand flagged off the event, emphasizing the people’s desire for peace and normalcy in Manipur. He also highlighted the inclusive nature of the run, with active participation from women across all communities, including tribal groups.
