Alleging non-functional of the Tribal Affairs Department in the wake of the ongoing ethnic violence in the State, the Manipur Naga Youth Organisation (MNYO) has urged the state government, particularly the chief minister, to appoint a new tribal affairs minister in the State.
In its demand for appointment for a new tribal affairs minister, the Naga youth of Manipur highlighted the importance of the department for the tribals in the hill districts of the State.
"The Tribal Affairs and Hills, and Horticulture Departments, important departments responsible for the welfare and development of the tribals, have not been functional since the outbreak of the ethnic clash in the State," said the President of MNYO, Thotreingam Keitrangnao, while briefing the media at Manipur Press Club on Wednesday.
Citing the reasons for the non-functioning of the departments, Thotreingam said the concerned minister for the two departments belongs to the Kuki community, who has not been able to attend the office and perform duties as a minister.
He claimed that the entire affairs of the two departments in terms of releasing funds and implementation of various schemes, work programmes, etc., have been held up for the last one year, which he said is an injustice to the tribal community not involved in the ethnic conflict.
Thotreingam also alleged that development of tribal and hill areas has been paralysed and has gone in reverse due to the non-functioning of the concerned minister.
"All the departmental schemes and work programmes are pending and various beneficiaries under various schemes of TA and Hills and Horticulture departments for the financial year 2022-23 and 2023-24 are missing due to the absence of minister-in-charge," he added.
