Manipur violence: 3 gunned down in Sugnu Firing, many sustain injuries, 8 Kuki villages torched

As many as three individuals died in a gun firing early this morning between tribal village volunteers and Manipur State Police commandos which took place in Serou area bordering Kakching and Chandel districts.

According to sources, the firing took place in Serou area at around 4:00pm. The Meitei miscreants shielded by the State Police Commandos torched Langching, a tribal village, in the wee hours of Sunday, the 28th May, 2023. In retaliation to the attack on Kuki-Zo village, the tribal groups burned down one Private School belonging to the Meitei community.

Thereafter, heavy exchange of fire took place between tribal volunteers and the Meitei radical groups who were spearheaded by the state Police Commandos. In the firing, as many as 3 persons were gunned down by the State Police Commandos while more than nine individuals sustained injuries.

Out of the three dead body, two were deposited at Churachandpur district hospital mortuary while one dead body was lying unclaimed in the firing area due to the ongoing heavy exchange of fire. As per information culled from the spot, the three deceased were gunned down using sophisticated weapons like Snipers. The report added the use of sophisticated weapons like mortar bombs and Snipers is a manifestation of the handiworks of Valley Based Insurgent Groups (VBIGs).

As per data and reason of injuries available with the Churachandpur district hospital, 2 sustained injuries due to Bomb Blast, 1 injured of Gunshot and others sustained injuries in the firing process.

The Meitei mobs have also burnt down eight tribal villages belonging to the Kuki community. The list of villages burnt down included Langching, Sugnu Tribal, Zou Veng, Khodang, Gothol, H. Gamnom, Khulim and Munnomjang.

On the other hand, Meitei miscreants on Saturday midnight have torched Smartstalk School located at Kangchup, Tuikun village, Hinnom Veng near Chingkhong Bazar, and Singda Kuki near Singda Bazar. The villages and the School falls under Kangpokpi district. There has been no report of casualties till the filling of this report.
