Manipur Violence: Rahul Gandhi accuses PM for failing India, Manipur

By THJ Desk — On June 15, 2023

Former Congress President, Rahul Gandhi, has accused the Government of India's failure in de-escalating the Manipur violence for over 40 days since the outbreak began on May 3, 2023.

Taking to his official tweeter account on Thursday, Rahul Gandhi has accused that the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has failed India and is cpmpletely silent.

"BJP’s politics of hatred has burnt Manipur for over 40 days leaving more than a hundred people dead. The PM has failed India and is completely silent," Rahul Gandhi tweeted.

The Congress leader also demanded that 'an all-party delegation must be sent to the state to end the cycle of violence and restore peace.'

"Let’s shut this ‘Nafrat ka Bazaar’ and open a ‘Mohabbat ki Dukaan’ in every heart in Manipur," he said.

Earlier, two Congress MPs from Kerala had also reportedly accused the Manipur Government that the later sided with one community and support criminals.

The two Congress MPs Hybi Eden and Deen Kuriakose from Kerala visited Manipur to take stock of the current situation. Their visit was made secretly due to the restrictions imposed on Congress delegation in riot-affected areas. After their visit, the MPs concluded that the state government has sided with only one community, and supporting the miscreants.

According to the MPs, Manipur has become like a warzone. The duo visited a few camps and met innocent people who lost their family members. Many are in hospitals. People are suffering there due to the lack of medicines, they said.

The two Members of Parliament also met some students, who have been separated from their parents and have no clue about their education. The state government has failed to address these issues. Manipur is burning for more than a month now, the MPs said asking what action the Biren Singh government has taken to deal with those issues.

“We visited Saint Paul’s Pastoral Centre in Imphal. A day before our visit, there was a massive attack against St.Joseph School which is functioning in the same campus. A group of people hurled bombs at the school and stones were pelted too. The school is a temporary camp of RPF. The attack continued for more than 4 hours," the MPs reportedly said.

The Congress MPs also said that the minorities were unsafe there and accused the state government and Manipur police of siding with only one community.

"Thousands of houses of the people have been burned down, which has rendered them helpless and clueless about their future. Now this issue is not only of Manipur but a humanitarian crisis for everyone.”

‘Alleging that Manipur is being ruled with brutality, the two MPs alleged that they were told that weapons, including guns, were given to one group to attack the other.

"We saw people queuing for hours in front of ATMs despite living in Digital India. There is no internet in the state for more than 40 days. Despite terming this as an ethnic riot, many Christian churches were destroyed. Even the Christian churches and institutions of the Meithei sect were set on fire,’’ MPs said.

Report also stated that the two MPs did not inform anyone of their visit and went there as regular visitors. They assured that they will meet the Prime Minister, the Home Minister, and Congress High Command to brief the real story of Manipur.
