Rainstorm Destroys School Building in Thanlon

Principal of the school and Parish priest Fr. Roju Jose said he was totally helpless as to rebuilding the destroyed structures would require a heavy task. The missionaries were now at the mercy of the government and well wishers.

A Christian School and Hostel were damaged in a storm accompanied by rain that swept through some parts of Manipur, particularly in Thanlon Sub-Division, Churachandpur, on Sunday evening.

The Catholic Missionaries in Thanlon village in Churachandpur district were in miserable situation when the heavy rain and storm struck their school and hostel building yesterday.

The hostel which was housing around 60 children from the nearby villages was totally damaged and flooded with water making it unfit to stay. The nearby play school was also completely destroyed.

St.Xavier’s school in which 299 students seek education was partially damaged making it difficult to use. The students are now taken refuge in the nearby parish church where they not only stay but also use it as their school. The food grains stored in the hostel was also completely swept by water.

Similarly, rain accompanied by strong wind also swept through various parts of Churachandpur district headquarters, 65 km south of Imphal for two consecutive nights on April 19 and 20. Power supply lines were also affected in many parts of the state. Fortunately, no human casualties were reported in the storm which wreaked havoc in many locations in the state.
