Tension erupted between Old Tamenglong/Tamenglong Khunjao (Nriangluang) and Dailong villagers in Tamenglong district over a land boundary dispute on Monday.
Videos showing the two groups pelting stones at each other from opposite directions have surfaced on social media. Many users have shared the footage.
According to sources, villagers from Tamenglong Khunjao organized a rally toward the district headquarters from Khunjao. However, the rally was allegedly interrupted by villagers from Dailong at Tamenglong Bazar.
It is learnt that some villagers sustained injuries during the clash. Following the incident, the Rongmei Baptist Church Council issued a press release appealing for peace.
In response, the District Magistrate of Tamenglong, Dr. L. Angshim Dangshawa, imposed restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, with immediate effect.
The order covers the entire Tamenglong Headquarters area and the bordering regions between Dailong, Duigailong, and Old Tamenglong villages. The situation intensified as residents of Old Tamenglong prepared to hold another rally, raising concerns about potential violence.
The magistrate's order cited the risk of arson, disruption of daily life, and possible breach of peace, leading to the enforcement of Section 163 of the BNSS.
The restrictions will remain in effect until further notice, while local authorities continue to monitor the evolving situation. Security has been heightened in the region to maintain peace.
