Withdraw central forces from Saibol or face indefinite blockade on NH-2: Warns CoTU

This blockade is not a choice but a necessity," CoTU Spokesperson said.

Amidst escalating tensions in Kangpokpi District of Manipur, the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) of Sadar Hills has issued an ultimatum to the authorities, demanding the withdrawal of Central Forces from Saibol village by 4 pm on December 31.

Failure to comply, CoTU warns, will trigger an indefinite economic blockade on National Highway 2, a critical transportation route connecting the region to the rest of the country.

The demand follows a violent incident in Saibol, where security forces allegedly used tear gas and physical assault against Kuki-Zo women protesting the occupation of community bunkers by Central Forces. The crackdown reportedly left 15 women injured, with three in critical condition at Saikul Community Health Center (CHC). One victim has suffered severe eye injuries, further intensifying outrage in the region.

Denouncing the government’s actions as a blatant human rights violation, CoTU spokespersons have vowed to take a firm stand. "Our people have suffered enough. The use of excessive force on unarmed women is unacceptable," a CoTU representative stated. "If our demand for the withdrawal of forces is not met by the deadline, we will enforce a complete blockade of National Highway 2."

The proposed blockade threatens to paralyze the region’s transportation and commerce, with potentially severe economic consequences. As the region's lifeline, National Highway 2 is pivotal for the movement of goods and essential services. The disruption would escalate the already volatile situation, heightening tensions between the Kuki-Zo community and the authorities.

"This blockade is not a choice but a necessity," the spokesperson added. "The government has pushed us into a corner. We demand justice for the injured and an end to the occupation of our community spaces."

The Saibol incident has sparked widespread condemnation and intensified calls for accountability. Community leaders and human rights advocates have decried the actions of security forces, urging the government to address grievances before the situation spirals further out of control.
