Manipur: Media fraternity condemns physical assault on journalist

The All Manipur Working Journalist Union(AMWJU) and Editors Guild of Manipur(EGM) on Wednesday condemned the assault on a journalist from the mainland India and a staff of another local media house at the office complex of the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Imphal.

In connection with the incident, AMWJU and EGM issued a joint statement stating that a person identified a Meitram Sanatomba@ Sana Meitram (44) from Sega Road Takhellambam Leikai, Imphal entered the DIPR complex around 1:00 PM in the evening and assaulted a journalist from Aaj Tak and a staff of another local media. It stated that the individual also destroyed an internet modem that was installed inside the DIPR auditorium.

Stating that such act was a threat to right to freedom of expression, the media fraternity demanded that the concern authority should take up befitting action against Sana Meitram, who has already been arrested by the police, in vandalism and assault charge.

The two journalists’ bodies suggested that any individual who are not satisfied with reports of media house must approach the media house or deal with it legally.

AMWJU and EGM also suggested that DIPR should take up necessary steps for the protection of journalists who are performing their duties inside its complex.
