The Naga Students’ Union Chandel (NSUC) has alleged that there were anomalies in the declaration of the results of 6th semester examination of Bachelor of Sciences, Bachelor in Physical Education & Sports and Bachelor of Arts (Honours and Regular) under the Dhanamanjuri University (DMU), Imphal, which was held in the month of July 2023.

In a letter written to the Chief Minister of Manipur, N. Biren Singh, on October 9, the NSUC stated that they were perturbed by the anomalies in the declaration of the results of the said examination, the results for Chandel students have been allegedly put on hold.

The letter stated that the students of Chandel were compelled to take the said examination at the Deputy Commissioner’s office complex, Chandel, due to the ongoing crisis in the State. However, the results of the students of Chandel are being withheld till date while their batch-mates’ results have been declared on September 06, 2023, it said.

The Naga Students’ Union Chandel warned that it would not tolerate such discrimination at any cost as the delay in declaration of the results could risk detrimental to the students’ academic as well as professional careers.

It is worth mentioning that ‘The Hills Journal’ had earlier published a report of discriminatory exam results for the students of Rayburn College in Churachandpur district. In the results, it was found that the Manipur University had allotted a single digit mark or ‘no mark’ to the students of Rayburn College in Psychology department, which was declared on August 18, 2023.

Mentioning the lack of banking system in Chandel, the Naga Students’ Union said that the UCO-Bank, Chandel Branch, has been unable to cater services to the people of Chandel due to shortage of staff compounded by linkage problem to the server, and only one SBI ATM booth is functional for the whole district.

“It is unfathomable that only one ATM can render services to the whole of a district. You can imagine the plight of the people of Chandel, especially of those who have to come to the District Headquarters from remote areas just to find that Banking services are unavailable,” NSUC told Biren Singh.

The union has requested the authority concerned to look into the aforementioned grievances of the people of Chandel at the earliest.

Dismayed at the continuous imposition of internet ban in the entire state of Manipur, the Naga Students’ Union reiterated that Chandel District has always been in a peaceful zone. “NSUC understands the imperative of the government in taking necessary measures to curb the ongoing crisis but, imposing mobile internet ban in peaceful zone like Chandel defies rationality,” it said.

The letter further stated that the people of Chandel have put in great efforts and sacrifices in maintaining peace and tranquillity in the District. However, their efforts have been in vain owing to the internet ban and that the people have been unnecessarily victimized by depriving internet services which is the basic need these days, it stated.

“People from all walks of life in general and students, competitive exam aspirants and entrepreneurs in particular, have been paralyzed in many ways due to non- availability of mobile internet services in this peace loving district,” NSUC said, adding that such kind of discrimination would further widen the gap between the people of the hills and the valleys.

The students’ union demanded that all their grievances be addressed promptly in the interest of the student’s community and the people of Manipur as a whole.

Mentioned may be made that since October 5, NSUC had been demanding immediate restoration of mobile internet services in Chandel and had warned of intense agitation which could deteriorate the ongoing crisis if the Government did not restore mobile internet services in the district.
